As the nation pays homage to martyrs of on Kargil Vijay Diwas today, it is important to thank the man who was responsible for the commemoration of Kargil war victory over Pakistan.

It was BJP MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who raised the issue in Parliament in 2009 and ensured that the war heroes were remembered every year on 26 July. On 23 July, 2009, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, under the Matter of Urgent Public Importance, had spoken about Kargil victory in the Rajya Sabha.

He insisted in the House that the Ministry of Defence and the government memorialise the day and celebrate it every year.

Thanks to him, the success of Operation Vijay came to be commemorated as Kargil Vijay Diwas. Since 2010, each year, on 26 July, India remembers its war heroes of Kargil and pays tributes.

In 1999, Indian soldiers fought against intruders of Pakistan and reclaimed high posts in Kargil. Operation Vijay ended on 26 July after over 60 days of war. More than 500 Indian soldiers and officers died in the battlefield.
