A customer  Abeed Mohammed found a caterpillar in the vegetarian biriyani he had ordered from IKEA in Hyderabad. He posted a tweet on his social media handle with the photographs of the plate of vegetarian biriyani with the caterpillar.

Following the complaint, food safety officials from Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) conducted a raid at IKEA store situated at Madhapur. After inspection, they collected the food samples and the officers also collected samples of other food items in the store.

However, the staff explained that the vegetarian biriyani was not prepared at the IKEA kitchen but was from Haldiram's from Nagpur, with whom IKEA has a tie up.

Accordingly, after inspection, the GHMC issued a notice and imposed a fine of Rs 11,500 on IKEA as it found that the rule of segregating waste was also not followed at the store.

Abeed had also tagged Hyderabad Police, Telangana Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development K T Rama Rao, and IKEA Hyderabad in his tweet.
