Income Tax department sleuths raided the premises of SPK Group, one of the major road contractors in Tamil Nadu. Offices in Chennai, Madurai and Aruppukottai were searched.

The I-T department was tipped off about tax evasions and raided 30 locations belonging to or related to the company. They reportedly seized Rs 80 crore of unaccounted cash from the raids.

Although the management is said to pledge allegiance to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), the I-T department is probing the group's alleged nexus with politicians from the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

This comes on the heels of raids on Christy Friedgram Industry and Agni group of companies. Christy Friedgram is a major supplier of egg, protein and pulses to Tamil Nadu government. I-T department officials seized Rs 17 crore cash, 10 kg worth gold and property documents after raiding over 70 locations. Premises of members of the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation - MD Sudha Devi and Contractor TS Kumaraswamy were also raided. In fact, an employee of Christy Friedgram jumped off the first floor of a building during the raid.
