New Delhi: In a major development, the Union government today appointed eminent missile scientist G Satheesh Reddy as the Chairman of the premier defence research agency DRDO almost three months after his predecessor’s retirement.

Reddy was holding the post of scientific advisor to the Raksha Mantri (defence minister) and also heading the strategic missile systems division of the DRDO which is in-charge of developing key weapon systems such as the Agni series and other important nuclear-capable missiles of the country.

“The Appointments Committee of Cabinet has approved the appointment of Dr G Satheesh Reddy, Scientific Advisor to Raksha Mantri, to the post of Secretary and Chairman, DRDO for a period of two years with effect from the date of assumption of charge or until further orders, whichever is earlier,” the government order on his appointment said.

Reddy has been working for a long time in the field of missiles. He is credited for developing the critical seeker technology for the Indian missile systems which has helped the country save billions of dollars over the years.

He has also been instrumental in pushing projects such as the Akash air defence system, NAG anti-tank guided missile system and the HELINA missile along with taking up new projects such as development of a new Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile System and a new ballistic missile.
