New Delhi: After a day-long suspense, Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) election results have finally been declared and it's a thumping victory for the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). The BJP's student wing captured three out of four DUSU posts on offer, including those of the president, vice president and joint secretary. The National Students' Union of India (NSUI), affiliated to the Congress, managed to get only the post of secretary.

Ankiv Baisoya of ABVP won the post of DUSU president by a massive margin. He secured 20,467 votes, whereas his nearest rival Sunny Chhillar of NSUI got 18,723 votes. The vice-president's post went to ABVP’s Shakti Singh who won it with 23,046 votes. NSUI’s Akash Choudhary won the post of secretary, while Jyoti Chaudhary of ABVP became the new joint secreatry.

Earlier, counting had to be suspended due to technical glitches in electronic voting machines (EVMs). Four EVMs were found to be faulty after which student bodies started protesting.

“We had proposed rectification of the faulty EVMs and resumption of the counting but the students were not ready for it. It was decided to suspend counting. A fresh date for the counting will be announced soon,” PTI had quoted an election officer as saying earlier.

This morning the counting was delayed by 80 minutes and had to be halted multiple times owing to technical snags in some of the EVMs.

However, the counting restarted late in the evening. Though the NSUI was ahead in at least two posts, they ended up winning just one. The Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) student wing Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS) didn’t manage to open its account.

Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken, however, tried to sound upbeat. “Under the given conditions, despite tampering or malfunctioning of EVMs, NSUI has performed admirably," he said.
