Kolkata: At least one person has been killed and 13 others were injured after a high intensity bomb blast rocked Kolkata’s suburban Dum Dum area on October 2.

The deceased is a child, identified as Bibhas Ghosh.

As ironic as it may sound, the blast happened on Gandhi Jayanti- the birth anniversary of a man who spent his entire life propagating non-violence. However, the Nagerbazar area, which is barely few kilometres from the Kolkata airport, was not spared the violence.

The injured were rushed to a local private hospital, but later were shifted to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for treatment.

Initial investigation suggested that the bomb was kept next to a fruit stall, which bore the maximum brunt of the blast.

Following the blast, window panes of the flats in vicinity were shattered and the shutter of a nearby shop was completely crushed.

The Commissionerate of Police in Barrackpore has confirmed the news. Moreover, sources in the Bengal police said that Criminal Investigation Department’s help was sought in the investigation.

Also, the bomb disposal squad was called to detect if any more explosives were there.

INVESTIGATION:

Initial investigation suggested that the explosive was a socket bomb and it was kept next to a fruit stall, which bore the maximum brunt of the blast. Traces of ammonium nitrate and iron nails were found at the spot.

Officials, privy to the investigation, said no timer was recovered.

However, the authorities are tight lipped about the intention behind the blast or if any militant organisation was involved.

POLITICS OF IT

The incident was soon painted in political colour. Since the blast happened near a Trinamool Congress Party (TMC) office, the ruling party blamed BJP for it.

However, BJP dismissed these allegations.

Also, food minister Jyotipriyo Mallik pointed fingers at RSS and said they were responsible for the blast.
