New Delhi: Delhi's Signature Bridge, inaugurated on Sunday after a scuffle between BJP and AAP party workers, became a nightmare for public by on Monday morning.

Office-goers from east Delhi found tons of stones lying at the entrance of the bridge. The public tried to remove these stones but even after multiple attempts, nothing happened.

This resulted in a massive traffic jam. Helpless commuters coming from east Delhi and Ghaziabad called the police enquiring about the reason the bridge remained shut even though it was inaugurated the previous day by Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal. The police, however, did not have any answer.

According to Delhi government officials, the Signature Bridge was supposed to open from 1 pm from Monday, but due to no proper communication, the public thought that the bridge had been opened on Sunday itself.

“We got to know from the traffic police that the timing of opening the bridge was 1 pm but we thought Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has officially handed it over to the public on Sunday itself. I had to stay there for more than 90 minutes due to traffic caused because of poor communication by the Delhi government,” Abhishek Rawat said.

People who were inconvenienced by the shutting down of the Signature Bridge said that the Wazirabad Bridge also had heavy traffic and there was a traffic jam for almost 3 km. The bridge was opened around 11 am after getting multiple complaints from the public.

According to the Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) project, the Signature Bridge was constructed for an expenditure of Rs 1,518 crore. The bridge is almost double the height of the Qutub Minar.

The Delhi government has claimed that the bridge will reduce the time of travel from Ghaziabad to central and north Delhi by 45 minutes. Residents of Seelampur, Bhajanpura, Anand Vihar, Ghaziabad and adjoining parts will be benefited the most.
