New Delhi: Delhi Police has arrested the notorious ‘Godmother of Crime’ whose family is facing 113 criminal cases. According to the police, 62-year-old Basiran alias Mummy has been arrested in a murder case.

“After a long legal battle and continuous efforts, 'Godmother of Crime', 62-year-old Basiran has been arrested in Sangam Vihar,” Delhi police said. “Her whole family is facing criminal charges and all the family members are absconding. She used to organise crimes in south Delhi and her job was to train fresh juveniles in crime,” a police official said.

“She used to operate multiple gangs of extortion, street crime, water mafia and so on and was infamous as the ‘Mother of Gangsters’ in crime world,” the official added.

She was arrested in a murder case that took place in September 2017. “A partially decomposed body was recovered from a forest area in K block, Sangam Vihar. During investigation it was found that Basiran was involved in the case. The victim was found strangulated, and a murder case was registered at Sangam Vihar,” said the police.

It was also found that she had taken around Rs 60,000 to kill the victim.

Meanwhile, Basiran had left her place and was declared a proclaimed offender. The Police also attached her property.

She filed an application for anticipatory bail at the Delhi High Court and for freeing up her property at the Saket Court. Both applications were, however, dismissed. On August 17, acting on a tip-off, a Delhi Police team apprehended her.

She had so much influence in the area that she used to operate three government borewells and used to charge Rs 800-1,500 from each family. She was also one of the main leaders of Delhi's water mafia. According to the police, whenever any major incident of crime took place in south Delhi, the first suspicion always fell on Basiran's and her family.
