A five-member bench of Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, Justices R F Nariman, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and Indu Malhotra gave the verdict decriminalising consensual homosexual sex in a landmark verdict today. The SC ruled that consensual adult gay sex is not a crime and people cannot alter their sexual orientation.

However, the Deobandi Ulemas have refused to accept the ruling as it violates the Islamic Sharia laws. Deobandhi Ulema Mufti Assad Qasmi, taking a stern stand on the decision of the Supreme Court said, "The decision of the Supreme Court that boys can have relationships among themselves is haram. It is not justified in the Shariat at all. According to the Sharia, Allah has created a woman for the man to have relations with so that they can procreate future generations. Two men in a relationship cannot procreate. So, this is the Supreme Court's opinion and we do not believe in it."

He also added that the Sharia deems homosexuality as haram and illegal saying, "No person in their right mind will tolerate this because it is not allowed at all in Islam."
