A good night’s sleep is extremely important for overall wellbeing. Irregular sleep patterns can contribute to health issues like obesity, diabetes, and heart attacks. It can also significantly impact your mental health. Today, let’s explore the reasons why you’re not able to get proper sleep.

Caffeine intake

Drinking coffee before bedtime is not recommended. The caffeine content of coffee can disrupt the body’s circadian rhythm. This can lead to problems like increased anxiety, improper sleep, and even nightmares. Continued consumption of coffee before bedtime can increase the issue of insomnia. Therefore, it is important to avoid drinking these caffeine-based drinks before bedtime.

Screen time

Another reason of inadequate sleep could be excessive exposure to light. It can drastically affect your body’s natural sleep and circadian rhythms. The blue light of mobile phones and laptops leads to decreased production of melatonin, a hormone that promotes sleep. For getting good and undisturbed sleep, put away your gadgets at least one hour before bedtime.

Consume a balanced diet

Issues like restless leg syndrome and jet lag can also contribute to a disturbed sleep pattern. To deal with the problem, improve your diet and seek help from a medical expert for stress management and treatment.

Managing anxiety

Your sleep patterns are also a reflection of your mental health. If you have been dealing with high levels of stress and worry, you may experience disrupted sleep. For relieving stress and anxiety, get involved in physical activities. Also, consider meditating daily for some peace of mind. If you find yourself getting up in the middle of night, take care of your sensory needs. Your body may require water, so drink a glass of water and then go back to sleep. If there is not proper ventilation in the room, open the windows to let some fresh air in.

Room's temperature

Remember to maintain a slightly cool temperature in your bedroom.  A warm room can raise your body temperature and disrupt your sleep and even a cold room can also lead to discomfort. Striking a balance is the key for achieving healthy sleep.

If you have been experiencing a disturbed sleep pattern for months, it is best to consult a doctor for proper treatment.
