Kerala: Domestic violence is a social evil that can leave the victim with a life full of trauma. The victims find it impossible to break the shackles and come out of this vicious circle. According to the statistics, nearly 30% of Indian women are victims of domestic violence. In the following article, we will read a story about a woman who fought against this social evil and secured a life of freedom for herself.

Violence after marriage

It’s the fear of society that prevents a person from doing what they want. Nauzisha too, had to face such impediments. She was highly educated and held a Masters degree in Computer; she started her career as a guest lecturer in a local college. Soon, her marriage was fixed.

Promises were made that she would be allowed to pursue her studies after marriage, but instead she became useless object lying in the corner of a room. She was forced to leave her job and was beaten by her husband every time she expressed her dissent. Everything felt like a dark hole.

Nauzisha gave birth to a son, and hoped that her husband would finally adopt a change for the better of his family. But to her disappointment, nothing changed and her husband started beating her for the most trivial things. She was physically harassed when the food wasn’t up to the mark or she didn’t do household chores properly.

Nauzisha’s family wanted to see her happy and asked her to leave her husband, but then she couldn’t gather up the courage fearing what the society might think of her.

Husband’s extramarital affairs

One day, Nauzisha found out about her husband’s infidelity. She had been trying to live with her husband only for the sake of her son, but she could not bear to be cheated on. She confronted her husband about it and was physically tortured. That’s when she gathered her strength and finally decided to leave her in-laws house forever.

Leaving the past behind

Nauzisha faced domestic violence for three years and her son was only one-year-old when she left her husband to start a new life. But the trauma of domestic violence had left such a mark on her that she felt dying would be easier than living.

She tried to commit suicide by jumping into a well. She treaded close to the well but could not take the jump. She thought about herself and the life her son would have to lead with her gone. In those moments, she became hopeful for a better life. She decided that she would fight against the injustice and help others to raise a voice against this evil.

Road to becoming a police officer

Her husband made it difficult but with the support of her family, Nauzisha soon filed for divorce. She resumed her job as a lecturer to become independent. She had set hopes higher this time.

She prepared for competitive examinations and passed the Kerala Police Special Recruitment exam in the year 2021. During a phase which could have easily destroyed the will of a common person, Nauzisha stood resilient in the face of adversities and became an achiever.

She became a police officer all while making several visits to the court to fight for her justice, doing a job, rearing of a child, and preparing for one of the toughest examinations. She secured first position in Thrissur and 8th rank in Ernakulam. On 15th April 2021, Nauzisha joined the Civil Police Force.
