Vellore: The Election Commission (EC) has announced the date of Lok Sabha election to Vellore constituency in Tamil Nadu. Accordingly the lone constituency, where election was cancelled due to money haul, will be conducted on August 5.

The EC notification for Vellore poll stated that the last date to file nominations is July 18 and by July 19 all nominations will be scrutinised. The last date to withdraw the nominations is July 22. Election will be held on August 5 and counting will be held on August 9.

The EC has finalised on using EVMs and VVPATs in all polling booths across Vellore.

Earlier, the Lok Sabha election to the Vellore constituency was cancelled by the Election Commission (EC) two days ahead of the polling (earlier scheduled on April 18), following recovery of huge amount of cash allegedly from an associate of a DMK leader.

A government notification rescinding the poll said the EC was "fully satisfied that the current electoral process in Vellore has been seriously vitiated on account of unlawful activities of certain candidates and some workers of the political party."

Perhaps, this was the first time election to a Lok Sabha constituency has been cancelled over use of money power.

The by-election to RK Nagar Assembly seat in Tamil Nadu was cancelled in April 2017 following similar seizure of huge cash, allegedly meant for bribing voters.

DMK treasurer Duraimurugan, whose son Kathir Anand is the party candidate in Vellore seat, told PTI that cancelling the poll was a "murder of democracy".
