In his latest monthly radio address, "Mann Ki Baat," Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the women of Jhansi for their remarkable efforts in rejuvenating the Ghurari River.
On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation through his monthly radio programme, "Mann Ki Baat." During his remarks, he highlighted the water conservation initiatives being implemented across the country to address the water crisis. He specifically acknowledged Jhansi district in Uttar Pradesh, praising the women for their efforts in revitalising the Ghurari River and reducing water wastage. He also expressed his gratitude to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for showcasing the contributions of women from self-help groups in Uttar Pradesh, particularly in the water-scarce Bundelkhand region.
Mann Ki Baat
In his address on "Mann Ki Baat," Prime Minister Modi highlighted the remarkable efforts of women in Jhansi who have revived the Ghurari River. These women, part of self-help groups (SHGs), have spearheaded this movement as "Jal Sahelis." Their dedication is inspiring; they filled sacks with sand to construct check dams, effectively capturing rainwater and replenishing the river. This initiative has not only addressed the local water crisis but also brought joy to the community. PM Modi remarked that women's empowerment is enhancing water conservation, while, in turn, the revival of water resources is strengthening women's roles in society.
It is noteworthy that the Jal Sahelis undertook this initiative in Simrawari village, located in the Babina development block of Jhansi. They worked tirelessly for six days to revive the Ghurari River, filling sacks with sand to construct barriers that captured the river's water. Their efforts have not only rejuvenated the river but also sent a powerful message to the community. The Jal Sahelis have ensured that local residents have access to water for bathing and that cattle have a reliable source of drinking water.
Not only in Jhansi, but the Yogi government is also making significant strides in water conservation across the entire Bundelkhand region. Overcoming numerous challenges, it has successfully provided piped water connections to most families in both Vindhya and Bundelkhand. Under the Har Ghar Nal Yojana, the government is ensuring piped water supply to 95 percent of households. Additionally, efforts are underway to renovate village ponds, establish rainwater harvesting structures, and clean reservoirs. The Yogi government is also actively encouraging women in self-help groups throughout the state, empowering them in various initiatives.
The Jal Sahelis have already received recognition from both the State and Central Governments for their contributions to water conservation. They are actively supporting the government’s efforts in Bundelkhand, not only by participating in water conservation projects but also by raising awareness about the importance of conserving water. Their ongoing commitment plays a vital role in promoting sustainable practices in the region.
CM Yogi
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Modi, praising the mothers who have become an inspiration for water conservation. On his X page, he wrote, "In the Mann Ki Baat programme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji highlighted the efforts of women from self-help groups in Jhansi district, who have become 'Jal Sahelis' and are dedicated to protecting and reviving the dying Ghurari River. This is a matter of pride for Uttar Pradesh and will surely give a new impetus to our water conservation efforts. These 'Jal Saheli' women, who have contributed to the construction of hundreds of reservoirs, exemplify the strength of women. They have faced numerous challenges and stand as shining examples of water conservation and development. My heartfelt congratulations to the mothers who inspire us all, and thanks to the Prime Minister."
