Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia has achieved a monumental milestone in global cinema by earning a nomination for Best Director at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards. Her film, All We Imagine As Light, has also secured a nomination in the Best Motion Picture-Non-English Language category. Kapadia's nomination marks the first time in 25 years that an Indian filmmaker has been recognized in the prestigious Best Director category—a feat last achieved by Shekhar Kapur in 1999 for Elizabeth.
The nominations, announced on December 9 by Mindy Kaling and Morris Chestnut, have placed Kapadia among an elite group of international directors. Competing in the Best Director category are Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez), Sean Baker (Anora), Edward Berger (Conclave), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), and Coralie Fargeat (The Substance).
About the Film
All We Imagine As Light tells a poignant story of love, longing, and isolation in the bustling city of Mumbai. The narrative revolves around two Malayali nurses, Prabha and Anu, played by Kani Kusruti and Divya Prabha, alongside Chhaya Kadam, who portrays their friend Parvati. The film delves into Prabha’s struggles as a nurse coping with an unexpected gesture from her estranged husband and Anu’s quest for intimacy in her relationship with her boyfriend.
The film’s accolades began with its Grand Prix win at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, followed by recognition as the best international film at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards and the Gotham Awards. Sight and Sound magazine also named it the best film of the year.
A Significant Milestone for Indian Cinema
The Golden Globes' recognition of Kapadia continues the legacy of Indian filmmakers like Shekhar Kapur, who paved the way for global recognition of Indian talent. This year, Kapadia’s work stands out, not only for its artistic brilliance but also for its exploration of nuanced human emotions against the backdrop of urban chaos.
Kiran Rao's Laapataa Ladies received the nod as India's official Oscars entry, despite All We Imagine As Light's international acclaim. Nevertheless, the film has found a strong distribution network, with Janus Films and Sideshow handling its release in the U.S., while Rana Daggubati’s Spirit Media brought it to Indian audiences.
When and Where to Watch
The Golden Globe Awards will air live on January 6, 2025, at 6:30 AM IST, streaming exclusively on Lionsgate Play in India. The event will honour excellence in both film and television, spotlighting achievements across a range of categories.
Kapadia’s nominations underscore her exceptional talent and storytelling prowess, marking a significant moment for Indian cinema on the global stage. Her journey is a testament to the power of authentic, thought-provoking narratives that resonate with audiences worldwide.
