National Maritime Day, observed annually on April 5, commemorates people who spend months at sea, contributing to India's trade. It also marks the launch of the first Indian-owned ship. This year, the Government of India will commemorate National Maritime Day and Merchant Navy Week from March 30 to April 5.

The National Maritime Day provides an opportunity to highlight the maritime industry's significance in India's economic progress as well as the sacrifices of sailors who not only manage commerce but also contribute to national security by preventing pirate assaults.

History of the day:
The voyage of the SS Loyalty, the first ship of The Scindia Steam Navigation Company Ltd., is regarded as a watershed milestone in Indian navigation history. It started its voyage to the United Kingdom. This is extremely significant, especially since the British government formerly controlled the marine lanes. National Maritime Day was commemorated for the first time on April 5, 1964. Since then, it has been observed on the same date each year.

Significance of the day:
The day is observed with the goal of raising awareness and acknowledging the efforts and contributions of India's maritime industry to the country's economic growth and development.

The sector faces several issues, including environmental contamination, piracy, and changing trade dynamics. This day also aims to call attention to the industry's difficulties and enable us to work together to develop effective solutions. Senior officials receive the NMD Award of Excellence in recognition of their contributions to the marine sector's development.

It also encourages the younger generation to pursue careers in this field.

Theme of the year 2024:
Every year, a special occasion is marked. National Maritime Day 2024's theme is "Navigating the Future: Safety First."

How is it celebrated?
National Maritime Day celebrations take place around the country; however, major ports such as Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Kandla, and Visakhapatnam have special government-sponsored events such as seminars, medical camps, and blood donation drives.
National Maritime Day events include Merchant Navy Flag Day and a wreath-laying ceremony to honor sailors who died in World Wars I and II.
