Travelers to Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), a commercial district famous for traffic jams and sly autorickshaw drivers who overcharge, will soon have an additional transportation option: the pod taxi.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) approved the project on an 8.8-kilometer stretch between Bandra and Kurla via BKC on Tuesday during an internal meeting.

It is anticipated that the pod taxi project on the heavily traveled BKC-Kurla route will cost Rs 1016 crore. Speaking about the pod taxi's range, a senior member of the project stated that it will travel 8.8 kilometers in total, with a per-kilometer fee of Rs 21.

Each pod taxi may carry six passengers and will run at a speed of forty kilometers per hour with 38 stops. Millions of people who commute every day between the two railway stations and BKC are expected to find life easier with the project, which is expected to cost Rs 1016 crore.

The elevated stations won't take up much room and are probably going to be built close to the commercial buildings. According to sources, the intention is to provide a seamless transfer between these public transportation options after the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet train project and Metro Line 2B are completed.

The popularity of pod taxis is widespread, and not just in Mumbai. The Uttar Pradesh government gave its approval last year for Noida to have a pod taxi service that connects the city to Jewar Airport.
With up to 12 passengers per pod cab, the project which was inspired by models from London and Abu Dhabi should be operational by March 2026.
