Mumbai: It is not a very good start for the Congress in Mumbai as the BJP and Shiv Sena have taken leads in all seats.

Actress Urmila Matondkar is trailing by almost 42,000 votes in north Mumbai. From Mumbai south, Arvind Ganpat Sawant is leading, leaving Congress leader Milind Deora behind by almost 17,000 votes.

Deora is currently the president of Mumbai regional congress committee. He had served as a minister of state (MoS) of communications and information technology and also a former MoS with the ministry of Shipping. His father, Murli Deora, had represented the constituency for three terms.

Similarly, from Mumbai North central, Poonam Mahajan is ahead of Priya Dutt with almost 14,000 votes.  Last time, Poonam, daughter of late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan won the seat by more than 1,80,000 votes.

Situation is also bad for the Congress in north Mumbai as actress Urmila Matondkar is trailing against BJP’s Gopal Shetty, who had won the seat by almost 4.4 lakh votes. He is popular in the area.

In 2016, Shetty had surrendered public land, including the Poinsur Gymkhana, Kamla Vihar Sports Complex and Veer Savarkar Udyan plots, which had been directly or indirectly placed under his control. He had courted controversy for his comments over farmer suicides and participation of Christians in the freedom movement.

Congress’s main face in Mumbai Sanjay Nirupam is also trailing from North west Mumbai by almost 18,000 votes. Here Shiv Sena's Gajanan Kirtikar is leading.
