Kochi: Kerala state department for women and child development director Sheeba George on Wednesday said that one or two kids are being molested everyday in the state. She reportedly made this statement during the inaugural function of All Kerala CRS Conclave organised by the Kerala management association in Kochi.

Sheeba said children in the state are subjected to various kinds of torture from the sixth month after their birth. She added that there are many rules and laws in the state to avoid crimes against children, but still “we are still in the dark about it,” she said.

Atrocities against children have seen an increase in the state in the last four years, with at least 6,000 POCSO cases still pending trial.

Last month too, Kerala Police arrested four men for allegedly raping two minor girls. Two of the accused are the father and uncle of the minor girls.

According to sources, the men allegedly raped the two girls on multiple occasions in the last 12 months. The incidents came to light after one of the victims, with the help of a panchayat member, filed a complaint with Kallambalam Police.

It was only after the police began the investigation that the minors’ mother became aware of the alleged incidents.

On June 1, the Thalayolaparambu Police arrested Yusuf, a 63-year-old madrasa teacher, for allegedly sexually abusing two minor students of his class in Thalayolaparambu in Kottayam, Kerala.

Yusuf, who hails from Aluva in Kerala, was arrested at Kodungalloor by the Thalayolaparambu Police after a complaint was filed by the Mahallu committee, which is an executive body of the mosque, under which the madrassa functions.
