Kochi: The synod of the Syro-Malabar church said that it expelled Sister Lucy Kalappura from the Franciscan Clarist Congregation (FCC) after following all canonical norms of the church. The press release issued by the Media Commission on Tuesday (August 27) reads, "Those who are protesting against the  Vatican’s decision and trying to intervene in the internal issues of the congregation will face disciplinary action."

Meanwhile, the synod has ruled out the actions of Save Our Sisters (SOS) Action Council, a forum which supported the nuns’ protest. The synod has asked the former convener of SOS, to stop all his actions related to the forum. According to sources, those who protested under the SOS will face disciplinary action.

Sister Lucy was one among the five nuns who staged a protest on September 8 in front of Kochi high court opposing the alleged rape of a nun by former Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal. If Mulakkal is found guilty, he may get life imprisonment or minimum imprisonment of not less than ten years, say police sources.

Earlier, a show-cause notice was sent to Lucy, teacher of Dwaraka Sacred Heart School in Wayanad, Kerala.

Among other allegations, Lucy had been asked to explain her participation in a channel discussion and was questioned for writing in non-Christian newspapers and publishing a book of poems using Rs 50,000 without the permission of church authorities. The notice said that the nun's involvement on social media cannot be appreciated.
