Thiruvananthapuram: Absconding advocate Biju Mohanan who was suspected in 400kg gold smuggling via airport finally surrendered before Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) office in Kerala's Kochi.

The Kerala high court which considered Biju’s anticipatory bail plea on Thursday directed him to surrender before 10 am on Friday. Reports say that it was Biju who was controlling gold smuggling in the capital city. He is being questioned by the DRI.

25 kilograms of gold smuggled from Dubai was seized at the airport in Thiruvananthapuram. He surrendered during a probe related to this case. At least 400 kg gold was smuggled in a year-and-a-half, the reports mentions.

It is hinted that the gold was brought for PPM Chains owner Muhammadali. Hakkeem, manager of Thiruvananthapuram showroom and Muhammadali are absconding.

The woman, Vineetha also alleged that her husband Biju had threatened her into smuggling. Vineetha told the police that she had smuggled as much as 60 kg of gold five times in the past. 

She confessed to smuggling it for the first time in December 2018. 

She also revealed to the probe team that her husband and several of his friends who travelled frequently to Dubai also smuggle gold. Biju and Vineetha had a love marriage and both of them are lawyers. Vineetha has practiced in court only for a few days and Biju has not been to court for 2 years.

As Biju was afraid that his wife might reveal his illegal activities, he forced her into smuggling by threatening her of divorce and marrying another woman from the gang. Vineetha was so depressed of Biju’s smuggling activities and relationship with other women in the gang that she even tried ending her life.
