Bengaluru: In a major political development in Karnataka, 14 MLAs from the coalition Congress-JD(S) government have tendered their resignation to the Speaker's office today (July 6), said former JD(S) president H Vishwanath.

Speaker Ramesh Kumar had confirmed that he has received 11 resignation letters, but former JD(S) president H Vishwanath has claimed that 13 MLAs resigned on Saturday and Congress MLA Anand Singh had submitted his resignation, a week ago, taking the number of MLAs, who quit their post to 14.

If there resignations are accepted by the Speaker, this could result in the fall of government.

Meanwhile, the MLAs who resigned went to Raj Bhavan in Bengaluru and met the Governor Vajubhai Vala. The latest development is that the disgruntled MLAs, who chose to quit the government are heading to a resort in either Mumbai, Goa or Delhi.

Reports state that other MLAs will follow in the footsteps of veteran Congress MLA Ramalinga Reddy. If he doesn't withdraw his resignation, others are also likely to stay put and follow the same course of action.

However, Reddy, speaking to media has already said that there is no question of him withdrawing the resignation.

Known as the trouble shooter, minister DK Shivakumar's efforts to pacify and convince the MLAs against submitting resignation letters went in vain.

Meanwhile, Congress leaders from Eshwar Khandre to Shivakumar and Karnataka in-charge of the Congress party, KC Venugopal are trying hard to calm the disgruntled MLAs to talk them out of it.

Congress MLAs who submitted their resignation are Mahesh Kumthalli, BC Patil, Ramesh Jarkiholi, Shivaram Hebbar, ST Somashekar, Muniratna, Pratap Gowda and Byrathi Basavaraj and JD(S) MLAs are H Vishwanath, Narayan Gowda, Gopalaiah, as per the Speaker’s office.

Accordingly, if the resignations are accepted then the strength of the Assembly will fall from 224 to 210. The magic number will be 106. But both BJP and coalition partners (Congress and JDS) have 105 MLAs with them.
