New Delhi: Think of a serial killer on the prowl who has already killed six women and closing in on his next victim. Bengal’s elusive devil has a face and name now.

Kamrup Jaman has been caught. The west Burdwan police have claimed that he has targeted 12 women so far, out of whom six have been killed. He was out to kill his seventh target.

How Jaman got his kills

After multiple attempts and repeated failures to catch the serial killer, the police finally tasted success. A police official, requesting anonymity, said Jaman used to target women while they were alone in the house.

His method was extraordinarily sickening. He would choke the women to death with a bicycle chain.

Jaman would flee immediately after grabbing whatever valuables he could get. The police have said since few of his targets were lucky to survive, Jaman started using an iron rod along with the bicycle chain to ensure that his victims did not survive.

The series of murders

The first death took place on January 1, 2013, when he killed Purnima Ganguly in Kalna area. In January 2019, his first victim was Pushpa Das from Kalna area who was attacked on January 27. On May 27, he killed Anjana Roy in Mantaswar area of Bengal. In between, there were a host of attacks out of which one survived and is undergoing treatment at Burdwan medical college. Police took help of the CID to nab Kamrup Jaman. On Monday, while on his way to kill another woman, he was nabbed by the cops.

Meghalaya guv tweeted about it

The victim hails from Murshidabad district. The matter assumed greater significance ever since Meghalaya governor Tathagata Roy jumped into the fray. He tweeted, "Kudos to Police of Purba Bardhaman District, and especially to a civic policeman, for nabbing a horrible serial killer of women. His name is Kamaruzzaman Sarkar and he has allegedly so far killed 8 women by strangling them with a chain or bashing their heads in with a rod”.

The matter has once again raised serious concerns about the law and order situation in Trinamool-ruled Bengal.
