Indian Railways offers some special facilities to female passengers opting for train journeys. From helpline numbers, special waiting areas, and reserving berths, the Railways is dedicated to offering a comfortable and safe experience for women.

Travelling without a ticket

If a woman is found travelling without a ticket during nighttime, the TTE is not authorized to remove her from the train. It becomes the duty of RPG-GRP to ensure her safe relocation.

Reserving lower berth

Pregnant women enjoy the quota of reserving lower berth when booking train tickets. Similar facilities are offered to senior citizens, and women aged 45 and above.

Purchasing tickets

Women do not need to wait in line at reservation counters if there is no separate queue designated for women. Women can purchase tickets by forming a separate queue without the need to wait.

Accommodation

Female passengers have access to accommodation facilities in the non-reserved category within the coaches of express trains. Some trains offer separate compartment-coach facilities for women. These provisions aim to enhance the comfort and safety of female travellers.

Women-only trains

Indian Railways also operates special trains for women as needed. Women travellers can inquire about the availability of such trains from the railway office or relevant authorities. These special trains cater to the needs of women passengers.

Waiting areas

At many railway stations in India, separated waiting halls have been designed for women passengers to provide them with a comfortable and safe waiting area. According to the regulations, railway stations are required to have separate toilets for women to ensure their privacy and convenience.

Helpline number

Women passengers can request security assistance at any time by dialling the helpline number 182. This number is directly connected to the Divisional Security Control Room, which falls under the Railway Protection Force (RPF). The authorities ensure prompt assistance to female travellers.

‘Meri Saheli’ campaign

RPF is conducting the ‘Meri Saheli’ campaign, under which the authorities ensure the safety and well-being of female passengers. Police personnel make the rounds on long-distance journeys to learn about any concerns or issues. Problems are immediately addressed to give a comfortable travelling experience to women.
