International Mother Language Day 2024 is observed on February 21 every year. In India, a country known for its linguistic and cultural diversity, this day holds great significance and serves as a great reminder to deepen our understanding of our mother languages. 

International Mother Language Day 2025 Theme

The theme for International Mother Language Day 2025, "Languages Matter: Silver Jubilee Celebration of International Mother Language Day," marks the 25th anniversary of this significant observance. This year’s theme emphasises the importance of linguistic diversity and the need to promote multilingualism across the globe. It celebrates the achievements of the past 25 years while reaffirming the crucial role that languages play in preserving cultures, fostering understanding, and contributing to global peace. The theme encourages people worldwide to recognise and protect their linguistic heritage, promoting a more inclusive and diverse world.

This day was first proposed in Bangladesh in 1952, following the tragic deaths of four students who were advocating for Bengali to be recognised as the official language of the country. In 1999, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designated International Mother Language Day. The United Nations General Assembly also endorsed this proposal.

Preserving languages

The primary aim of International Mother Language Day is to preserve linguistic and cultural diversity. It also seeks to promote intergenerational education and the safeguarding of cultures. This day offers an opportunity to use and celebrate mother tongues, while also highlighting the importance of multilingualism in fostering cultural understanding, peace, and sustainable development.
