The drug is created by the research team at Tata Memorial Centre and can potentially stop the spread of cancer cells after the chemotreatment. It is a ray of hope especially in India where the cost of cancer treatment is colossal. The developers claim that the medicine can reduce the side effects of chemo and radiation therapy by 50%. It is a bold claim but it instills a sense of optimism for the future of cancer treatment.

How does it work?

The drug called “R+Cu”, is a pro-oxidant tablet consisting of resveratrol and copper. These two are responsible for creating oxygen radicals in the body that eliminate chromatin particles in dying cancer cells. If not destroyed these particles can turn the healthy cells into cancer cells. One more advantage of oxygen radicals is that they inhibit the movement of cancerous cells to the other parts of the body, controlling the process of Metastases. The new tablet from the Tata Memorial Centre will soon get approval from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) around June, following which human trials can begin, said Dr Badwe, Director of the Tata Memorial Centre.
