Itanagar: A 12-member Indian Army patrol team recovered the wreckage of a World War II vintage US Air Force aircraft from the snow in Arunachal Pradesh’s Roing district.

The Army received the tip-off about the wreckage from the local trekkers of Lower Dibang district and sent a special patrol team to survey the area on March 30.

The security personnel discovered the dilapidated aircraft in a remote location, 30 kms from Roing. The skeleton of the aircraft was completely buried below five feet of snow and covered with thick undergrowth.

The patrol team moved cross-country for 30 km through thick jungles and snow covered areas for eight days to spot the wreckage. Anyone seldom goes to the region because of its remoteness.

The wreckage, experts believe, will throw light on the history of World War II — bought by the Allies and the Axis.

World War II, one of the most devastating global wars, commenced from 1939, lasted till 1945 and involved more than 30 countries. The war ended with the Allies — France, Great Britain, the US, the Soviet Union — defeating the Axis — Germany, Italy, and Japan.
