Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Puri, declared on March 14th that the Central Government has reduced petrol and diesel prices by Rs 2 across the country. The announcement was made that the revised prices would be in effect from 6 am on March 15th. This reduction comes just before the announcement of Lok Sabha elections. The prices have come in effect from 6 am today. 

The revised petrol and diesel prices will lead to reduced expenses for consumers and operational costs for over 58 lakh diesel-powered heavy goods vehicles, 6 crore cars, and 27 crore two-wheelers. On X (formerly Twitter), Hardeep Puri supported the government’s decision. He also emphasized its importance in maintaining welfare and convenience of the citizens. 

Reduced prices

Following the government's decision of petrol and diesel price reduction, here are the updated prices in major cities across the country:

Delhi: Petrol is priced at Rs 94.72 and diesel at Rs 87.62
Mumbai: Petrol is priced at Rs 104.21 and diesel at Rs 92.15
Kolkata: Petrol costs Rs 103.94 and diesel at Rs 90.76
Chennai: Petrol costs Rs 100.75 and diesel at Rs 92.34

Lowest prices

The Central Government highlighted the benefits of reducing the petrol and diesel prices. It will boost the travel and tourism sector. With this, Hardeep Puri shared that India now has the lowest fuel prices compared to major European countries. As of March 14, 2024, the average petrol price in Italy is Rs 168.01, 79 percent higher than India's petrol rates. In France, it’s Rs 166.87, 78 percent higher. In Germany, it’s Rs 159.57, a 70 percent increase. And in Spain, it is Rs 145.13, that is 54 percent higher than India's revised petrol rates..
