Bengaluru: Amidst high drama with 16 rebel MLAs giving Assembly session a miss, Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy on Friday (July 12) announced that he is ready to face the floor test and asked the Assembly Speaker Ramesh Kumar to set a date for the same.

Soon after the Supreme Court ordered to maintain status quo with regard to the resignations of 16 MLAs in the state, Kumaraswamy made this announcement in the Assembly during the first day of the monsoon session.

With the opposition BJP claiming that the Congress-JD(S) coalition government does not have the required numbers, Kumaraswasmy made a surprise announcement that he is ready to face the floor test.

He also asked the Speaker Ramesh Kumar to fix a date, so that there is an end to the ongoing political crisis in the state.

"Today there are many things happening in our state's politics because of the decisions of many MLAs, which has created a difficult situation. I am not here to sit in power, I appeal to you that in light of the developments I want to move a trust motion," said Kumaraswamy.

Meanwhile, the Congress had issued a whip to all its MLAs, making their attendance in the first day of the Karnataka Assembly session mandatory.

There are unconfirmed reports that the coalition government has been successful in coaxing two rebel MLAs to make a comeback to the party. However, there are also reports that five more MLAs are ready to resign.

Despite these rumours, Kumaraswamy has asked for a date to prove majority. Speaker has not responded to Kumaraswamy's request yet.
