Kolkata: Controversy and Mamata Banerjee's nephew Abhishek Banerjee seem to have a long-standing relationship. Now, the Trinamool MP is embroiled in a controversy over a helipad.

A helipad is being created in the upscale Salt Lake area in the suburbs of Kolkata for Banerjee's helicopter to land, reported Anandabazar Patrika. The report claims the residents of Salt Lake have questioned the move as it is the first time a helipad is being made in any block of the residential area.

The helipad, in blue, the colour signifying the Trinamool rule in Bengal, has reportedly come up at the FD block of Salt Lake . Many residents have reportedly questioned the legality of the helipad in the first place. It requires permissions of multiple authorities to turn any place into a helipad, even temporarily.

This is not the first time Abhishek Banerjee has got embroiled in a helipad related controversy. In April this year, CPI(M) leader Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya had reportedly gone to the Election Commission, complaining against the Trinamool leader for allegedly chopping down a 100-year-old tree to make a helipad Bijayganj area of Bhangar.

Bengali daily Ei Samay quoted Trinamool leader Arabul Islam's son Haqimul to suggest the tree was dead in any case.

Earlier, the nephew of Mamata Banerjee created ripples when news reports suggested that the customs department had held his wife Rujira Naroola with unaccounted gold at the Kolkata airport. Though she rubbished the allegation, the customs went ahead and filed a police complaint against her claiming she had stopped them from discharging their duty. Recently, the citizenship of Abhishek's wife was at the epicenter of a debate too when the MHA shot off a letter seeking an explanation as to why she had allegedly hid the detail while applying for a PAN card.
