Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is one of the most celebrated festivals in India. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. One of the most cherished traditions during Diwali is creating beautiful rangoli designs at the entrance of homes to welcome guests and bring positivity. This year, why not make your rangoli even more special by using natural colours made from ingredients right from your kitchen? Here’s how you can create vibrant, eco-friendly rangoli colours that are safe for your family and the environment.

Why choose natural colours?

Using natural ingredients for rangoli colours is not only environmentally friendly but also safe for your health and well-being. Synthetic colours can contain harmful chemicals that may irritate the skin or cause allergies. Natural colours, on the other hand, are non-toxic. Also, they add a personal touch to your decorations!

Ingredients and how to make natural rangoli colours

1. Red Colour

Ingredients: Beetroot
Grate a small beetroot. Dry the grated beetroot in the sun and then grind it into a powder for use.

2. Yellow Colour

Ingredients: Turmeric powder or marigold flowers
Turmeric powder is readily available in your kitchen and gives a bright yellow hue. If you prefer a more natural option, dry the petals of marigold flowers in the sun and grind them into a fine powder.

3. Green Colour

Ingredients: Spinach or moringa leaves
Blend fresh spinach or moringa leaves with a little water to create a paste. Dry the paste in the sun, then grind it into a powder.

4. Blue Colour

Ingredients: Blueberry juice or indigo plant
Crush fresh blueberries to make a paste. You can also use dried indigo leaves if available. Allow the paste to dry and create a powder for vibrant blue rangoli.

5. Orange Colour

Ingredients: Carrot or orange peels
Grate carrots or dry orange peels and grind them into a powder. Both will provide a beautiful orange hue to your rangoli.

6. White Colour

Ingredients: Rice powder or flour
Simply grind rice into a fine powder or use plain flour to create a bright white colour for your rangoli design.

7. Black Colour

Ingredients: Charcoal powder or black sesame seeds
If you have some burnt wood or charcoal, you can grind it into a fine powder. Alternatively, grind black sesame seeds for a natural black colour.

Have fun making beautiful rangolis. Happy Diwali!
