Sarla Thukral was born in Delhi in 1914. Growing up in a progressive family, she was influenced by her husband, who worked as an airmail pilot, igniting her passion for aviation.

At the age of 21, Thukral enrolled in the Lahore Flying Club, where she pursued her dream of becoming a pilot. In 1936, she made history by earning her pilot's license, becoming the first Indian woman to do so.

Thukral’s first solo flight was a significant milestone. She flew a small double-winged aircraft while wearing a traditional sari, showcasing both her skill and her cultural identity.

Over her career, Thukral accumulated an impressive one thousand hours of flight time at the Lahore Flying Club. Her dedication and talent in aviation were evident in her extensive flying experience.

Thukral's achievements opened doors for future generations of women in aviation. Her success served as an inspiration, encouraging more women to pursue careers in flying, which was predominantly male-dominated at the time.

In recognition of her contributions to aviation and her pioneering spirit, Google honoured Sarla Thukral with a special doodle on her 107th birth anniversary in 2021, celebrating her legacy and impact.
