In 2018, India witnessed its own #MeToo movement which created a buzz in B-town. The movement was initiated by actor Tanushree Dutta when she accused veteran actor Nana Patekar of sexually harassing her on the sets of their 2008 film Horn Ok Pleassss. After her accusations, Nana Patekar stepped down from Housefull 4 and lodged a complaint against Dutta. In this storm, many other big names from the Bollywood and other industries cropped up such as Sajid Khan, M J Akbar, Alok Nath, Vikas Behl and Anu Malik as well among others.

Right from Deepika’s Ghoomar song as Rani Padmavati to her performing Jauhar in the movie, everything was heavily criticised by various Rajput groups. Actor Akshara Haasan has responded to the controversy surrounding her private pictures that were hacked and leaked online. Taking to Instagram, the actor termed the incident as a #MeToo moment saying that she has approached cyber cell and Mumbai police for assistance.

The government of Tamil Nadu urged the makers to chop out a few scenes from the movie after finding them objectionable. A non-bailable arrest warrant was also issued against director AR Murugadoss for the scenes in Sarkar, which were later dropped after a court hearing.
