All-rounder Shankar has been ruled out of further participation in the event due to a toe injury sustained during a training session. Twenty eight-year-old Agarwal, a top-order batsman, has played two Tests but is yet to play an ODI.
The replacement of a player requires the approval of the Event Technical Committee before the replacement player can be officially added to the squad.
On Monday (July 1), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said Shankar had a “non-displaced fracture of the left big toe”.
“Mr Vijay Shankar was struck on the left big toe whilst batting in the nets on June 19th in Southampton. He was able to play in an unrestricted manner in the following two matches against Afghanistan and West Indies,” BCCI said in a media advisory.
“Following the match on June 27, the condition of his toe worsened and a CT scan showed he sustained a non-displaced fracture of the left big toe. The condition will require a minimum of three weeks to heal. The injury rules him out of the ongoing World Cup.
“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Mr Mayank Agarwal as Vijay Shankar's replacement following a request from the Indian team management for a suitable top-order batsman.
“An official request has been made to the ICC to consider the change in India's squad,” it added.
The Event Technical Committee of the ICC World Cup 2019 consists of Geoff Allardice (ICC, ETC chairman), Campbell Jamieson (ICC representative), Steve Elworthy (CWC representative), Alan Fordham (host representative), Harsha Bhogle and Kumar Sangakkara (both independent representatives).
