Beijing/New Delhi: The international police organisation Interpol on Sunday said that its Chinese chief Meng Hongwei, who went missing last month, had resigned with immediate effect.
After the French police initiated an investigation into his mysterious disappearance, it was reported that Hongwei had been detained in China for questioning as part of an investigation against him.
The 64-year-old Interpol chief had been “taken away” for questioning by discipline authorities “as soon as he landed in China” last week. Hongwei had allegedly accepted bribes and violated the law.
Hongwei was last seen late-September when he was about to leave for China from Interpol's headquarters in Lyon, south-east France.
Hongwei was the vice-minister of public security in China before he was elected as the head of Interpol in November 2016.
