Gurmatkal: Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said that the people of the grand old party had sacrificed their lives to get independence for the country and the BJP had not done anything. He made a controversial statement saying ‘not even dog’ belonging to the BJP had not sacrificed its life for nation’s freedom. Kharge also said that several people in the country are trying to defeat him in the Kalaburagi Lok Sabha election. "I know more about India’s independence. Narendra Modi is younger to me. When India got independence, Modi was not even born. I was born during independence. It was the people of the Congress who brought independence to India. But, not even a dog from BJP leaders’ homes had sacrificed its life for the country. We don’t have to be taught about patriotism by such people," Kharge told Congress workers in Kalaburagi's Gurmatkal.

Earlier, Kharge accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of attempting to "take control" of his party MLAs in Karnataka by using the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Income Tax to "terrorise" them in the BJP's alleged bid to topple the Congress-JD(S) coalition government in Karnataka.
