Ramanathapuram: Angry village women from Ramanathapuram district's Thiruvetriyur, on Sunday (August 25) staged a protest by performing final rites of electric poles as they faced severe power cuts and had a delay in implementing UDAY scheme to improve the efficiency of power supply in their village.

The women were seen garlanding the electric pole and crying around it claiming that UDAY scheme (Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana) was dead.

More than 500 families are living in Thiruvetriyur village in Tamil Nadu’s Ramanathapuram. The villagers have been receiving power supply through power supply lines laid from Thiruvadanai to Aadhiyur about 50 years ago.

As they faced power failures at least three days in a week, the villagers presented petitions to the district administration.

After several representations, the Centre decided to lay power lines in an alternative route under UDAY scheme.

The project, however, failed to take off even two years after the electric poles were laid.
