Seven dead, 10 injured at temple stampede in Trichy

Trichy: Seven devotees were killed and over 10 were injured in a stampede at Karuppasamy temple in Muthayampalayam village in Thuraiyur. The injured have been rushed to a government hospital in Thuraiyur.

The incident took place when devotees thronged to receive rupee coins from the temple priest that were being distributed as part of a ritual. It is believed that these coins would bring home prosperity and wealth.

Police said that thousands of devotees had gathered to perform pooja on the auspicious day of 'Chitra Purnima'. An investigation into the tragedy has been initiated.
