Dhanushkodi (Rameswaram):  Police personnel from the Q Branch CID detained a Sri Lankan Tamil who entered Dhanushkodi’s Arichalmunai from Sri Lanka by sea.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a Q Branch team detained the Sri Lankan national, identified as M. Arunraj, 24, while he was reaching the shore after getting dropped in the shallow waters off Arichalmunai, the southeastern tip of Rameswaram island, in the wee hours of Monday.

Upon being questioned, he said he had taken a fibreglass boat and paid 15,000 Sri Lankan rupees to the boatman to reach Arichalmunai. He was the lone traveller on the boat, and the boatman left after dropping him at the destination, he claimed.

The Q Branch police said Arunraj was born and brought up in the refugee camp at Paramathi Velur in Namakkal district. His parents arrived here as refugees in the early 1990s.

Arunraj will be handed over to the local police after being questioned by Q Branch Superintendent of Police G. Dharmarajan.

The local police said the Sri Lankan national, who had no valid papers, will be arrested under the Passport (entry into India) Rules, 1950 and the Foreigners Act.
