She was born in a distinguished family that included two Nobel Laureates in the field of Physics, S Chandrasekhar, her uncle, and Sir CV Raman, her grand uncle, who is credited with discovering the eponymous Raman effect. But to everyone’s surprise, Dr. V Shanta chose medicine as a career and today what most people don’t know is that she has been at the forefront of finding affordable cancer care in India for over six decades now. Today on National Cancer Awareness Day that also happens to be the day Sir CV Raman was born, we take a look at the Dr V. Shanta’s journey in her pursuit to fight the dreaded disease of cancer.
