Madurai: Tamil Nadu’s State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has issued a notice to the Madurai municipal police commissioner, after a case of police high-handedness came to the fore.

A biker was allegedly hit with lathi (baton) during a routine vehicle check, for not stopping his bike immediately. The biker fell unconscious and his pillion rider was allegedly not even allowed to rush him to the hospital.

The pillion rider then made a few calls to his friends who came to the spot and rushed an injured Vivek Kumar to a nearby hospital.

A day later, Kumar succumbed to his injuries leaving his one-year-old child and wife behind. Unable to bear the loss of her husband, Kumar's wife attempted to commit suicide but was rescued swiftly and rushed to a hospital where she is currently receiving treatment.
