Chandragupta I was a king of the Gupta dynasty, who ruled in northern India. Chandragupta was the son of the Gupta king Ghatotkacha, and the grandson of the dynasty's founder Gupta. His title Maharajadhiraja or king of great kings suggests that he was the first emperor of the dynasty.
