Kerala rains: Rivers overflowing; Cochin airport shut till August 11

Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday (August 9) sounded a red alert in Kerala’s four districts — Kozhikode, Wayanad, Idukki and Malappuram. Shutters of several dams in the state have been opened as heavy rains continued to lash Kerala. Peringalkuthu, Mangalam, Kundala, Kanjirapuzha dams, Maniyar barrage, Kuttuady dam, Moozhiyar dam have been opened. Ten people were killed due to floods in Kerala.

As of Thursday, more than 30 relief camps were opened across the state. Many arterial roads were underwater with boats being deployed for relief and rescue. Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) has said that the airport will not be operational till 3 pm on August 11.
