Ramanathapuram: The Mandapam Station of Indian Coast Guard (ICG) rescued eight fishermen who set out for fishing on Thursday (July 18) and were stranded in an island across the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).

Acting on a "distress call" from officials on Friday (July 19) morning, the ICG deployed two of its hovercrafts and realised that the fishermen were stranded near the island. The fishermen were later detained by the Sri Lankan Navy.

As the ICG could not cross the IMBL, the officials contacted the Sri Lanka Navy and explained that the fishermen were not involved in illegal fishing. According to reports, the fishermen were later returned to the country.
