Fearing confiscation of house over loan non-repayment; mother, daughter commit suicide in Kerala

Neyyattinkara: A mother and daughter committed suicide over fearing the confiscation of their house by bank officials. The family had taken a loan from the Neyyattinkara branch of the Canara Bank. The duo set themselves ablaze on Tuesday. The daughter died on the spot and the mother was rushed to the hospital, but she succumbed to injuries. The incident took place at Marayimuttam near Neyyattinkara. The deceased are identified as Lekha(40) and daughter Vaishnavi(19).

Fifteen years back, they had taken Rs 5 lakh from the Neyyattinkara Canara bank for house construction. They had repaid Rs 8 lakh until now. A seizure notice was issued to them asking to repay the remaining Rs 4,80,000. Relatives said that the family was not in a financial situation to repay the loan amount, so they committed suicide.
