Jakarta: India achieved its best-ever medals tally in the history of Asian Games after boxer Amit Panghal won a gold here on Saturday.

At the ongoing Asiad, 22-year-old army man Amit stunned Olympic champion Hasanboy Dusmatov 3-2 in the men’s 49kg final to clinch the yellow metal. It was a superb show by Indian Army's Naib Subedar from Haryana.

With Amit’s gold, India now has 66 medals (14 gold, 23 silver, 29 bronze) at the 18th Asian Games. This is the nation’s best-ever tally surpassing the previous 65 from 2010 Games in Guangzhou.

India finished boxing campaign with two medals. On Friday, Vikas Krishan had to settle for a bronze after pulling out of his semi-final bout due to an injury.

Later on Saturday, India face Pakistan in the men’s hockey bronze medal match while the women’s squash team play Hong Kong for gold.
