Jakarta: Indian athlete Arpinder Singh clinched gold medal in men’s triple jump on Wednesday, ending India’s 48-year wait for a gold in triple jump at the showpiece continental event with a jump of 16.77-metres.

Arpinder, a native of Punjab, received plaudits galore for his achievement at the ongoing Asian Games.

Arpinder was ignored by the Punjab government but kept training hard at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre at Sonipat for five years, and the Asiad gold is a fruit of those efforts.

Arpinder’s family is understandably elated at their boy’s achievement and expect that he would now get the honour that he has always deserved from the government.
