Tamil Nadu, which has a vast farming land, is facing a problem of villages being abandoned and those lands left unattended to. The statistics state that nearly eight lakh small farmers have give up farming in the last decade. Lakhs of people have left villages and have migrated to cities in search of other jobs as due to no water for drinking or irrigation. Those owning lands in villages complain that there are no labourers to carry out the farm work. When asked, farmers said that there is no water, no roads and even the houses are in a dilapidated state. The statistics also say that nearly 300 villages have been deserted as villagers have migrated to towns. The farms lie barren without any agriculture activities. A source said that there are rarely any young people in villages anymore as many are working in towns and cities. At this rate of change, soon more villagers are set to shift to towns, putting an end to agricultural activities.
