Terrorists try recruitment drive at LeT operative's funeral; security forces intervene

Aug 4, 2018, 7:27 PM IST

Terrorists on Saturday turned up at the funeral of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operative Umar Malik at the Malikgund area of south Kashmir's Shopian.

Malik and his accomplices were killed by security forces in an encounter on Friday.

As the accompanying video shows, two or three terrorists appeared on the stage where Malik's body lay. In a show of bravado, they fired in the air.

Among the militants seen firing in the air was wanted LeT terrorist Naveed Jatt, who had escaped from police custody early in 2018. He had turned up apparently to catch a last glimpse of another terrorist, Waqar Ahmad Sheikh, who was killed during the Friday encounter.

Jatt is a suspect in Shujaat Bukhari's murder, too.

Thousands of Kashmiri Muslims have arrived at Malikgund to attend the funeral. Army has been demanding stronger curbs on terrorists’ funerals as they are becoming opportunities for recruitment of more terrorists.
