Kannur: A total of 3,178 people have been arrested from all over Kerala for violence during the hartal on January 2. The Sabarimala Karma Samithi had observed a hartal with the support of the BJP.

Besides Kannur, Perambra in neighbouring Kozhikode, Malappuram and Adoor in Pathanamthitta also witnessed a series of similar attacks and vandalism on Friday night and in the early hours of Saturday following the entry of women into the Sabarimala temple.
Meanwhile, a Sabarimala Karma Samithi activist, who was severely injured in protests in Pandalam, succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday.
The protests had turned violent after the CPM and BJP protesters fought in front of the CPM area committee office. Stones were pelted and Sabarimala Karma Samithi activist Chandran Unnithan (55) was injured.
He was immediately taken to a private hospital in Pandalam and was later shifted to another hospital in Thiruvalla for better treatment but succumbed to his injuries.
Two women of menstruating age visited the Sabarimala temple on Wednesday. The two women were identified as Bindu from Kozhikode and Kanakadurga from Malappuram.
The Kerala director general of police (DGP) Loknath Behera has directed the police officials to take all necessary actions to maintain law and order in the state and arrest the culprits behind the attacks on the houses of several political leaders.
Meanwhile, a country-made bomb was hurled at MLA Shamsheer’s house in Madappeedika in Thalassery, Kannur district, on Friday. As per reports, no one was injured in the attack, but a water tank and some flower pots were damaged.
