General secretary of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Vaiko, has said that Tamil Nadu government can now use Article 161 of the Constitution to release Periravalan who has spent more than 24 years of solitary/single confinement. Perarivalan, among the seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, had sought remission/pardon from the Governor under Article 161 of the Constitution. Vaiko said that the verdict by Justice Ranjan Gogoi's bench has made it clear that Article 161 can be implemented and the AIADMK government should approach the Governor to discuss Perarivalan's release.
